eMediaLibrary OverDrive Downloadable Audiobooks

Digital audiobooks from OverDrive can be downloaded to your personal computer and transferred to a portable listening device (MP3 player, PDA, etc.) or, in some cases, burned to CD. This service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Please note that digital downloads can be enjoyed at home, at work, or when you travel, but are not for use on the computers at the Library.

Download and install OverDrive Media Console (free software):

As a first step, you will need to install free software called OverDrive Media Console.

To download the software and read about software system requirements, click below:

OverDrive Media Console version 1.0 (or later)

To see more information about OverDrive Media Console version 1.0 (or later), go to OverDrive Help.

Activate OverDrive Media Console software:

Before you use a title checked out from this website, you'll need to activate the OverDrive Media Console software you downloaded. You only need to activate the software once for each computer on which you'll use the material.

If necessary, download and install Windows Media Player® 9 series (or later) (free software):

OverDrive Media Console utilizes Windows Media Player® 9 series (or later) to play audiobook files. The first time that Windows Media Player attempts to open a protected file, it will alert you that a Security Update must be performed before the file may be opened. The update takes just a few moments, and is a one-time process that must be performed before Windows Media Player will allow any DRM-protected files to be played.

Your computer may already have Windows Media Player® 9 series (or later). If so, you will need only to perform the Security Update.

Check out and download an audiobook:

  1. Browse or search the eMediaLibrary website for downloadable audiobooks.

  2. When you locate a title of interest, click the title to view its detailed information.

  3. Begin the checkout process by clicking the “Add to Digital Basket” button. (If a desired title is not available, you may place a hold on the title by clicking the “Place a Hold” button. When this audiobook becomes available, you will receive an email message with instructions for checking out the audiobook. The audiobook will be held for you for 2 days.)

  4. Next, you can either choose to “Continue Browsing” or “Proceed to Checkout.”

  5. When you are ready to check out your audiobook(s), click “Proceed to Checkout.”

  6. On the Login screen, select “Batavia Public Library” in the “Library” box.

  7. In the “Library Barcode Number” box, type the barcode number located on the back of your Batavia Public Library card, without the spaces.

  8. In the “PIN” box, type your PIN. (Unless you have changed your PIN, it will be the word changeme.)

  9. Click the “Login” button.

  10. On the “Check Out” page, click “Confirm check out.”

  11. Now you’ll download each title you have checked out. Click the “Download” button underneath the picture of the book cover. OverDrive Media Console probably will open; if so, please jump to step 15 below. If not, continue with step 12.

  12. In the dialog box that appears, select “Save to Disk” and click “OK.” Save the file in a location on your computer where you can easily locate it later.

  13. Open the OverDrive Media Console software program. (If you need to download the software, please see the instructions above.)

  14. Drag the downloaded audiobook file into OverDrive Media Console (or, in Overdrive Media Console, use the File menu, select “Open,” and then locate the audiobook file and open it).

  15. In the “Get Media” dialog box that appears, click “OK.”

  16. The next dialog box allows you to select whether you will download the entire audiobook at once, or one part at a time. Once you make your selection, click “OK.”

Transfer an audiobook to a portable listening device:

  1. Once the download is completed, connect your portable listening device (MP3 player, PDA, etc.) to the computer.

  2. In OverDrive Media Console, click to highlight the audiobook title you wish to transfer to your player.

  3. Click the “Transfer / Burn” button. This will launch Windows Media Player.

  4. To transfer files from Windows Media Player 9, follow these directions.

  5. To transfer files from Windows Media Player 10, follow these directions.

You will never accrue late fees with titles you download from this website. At the end of the loan period, titles will expire and be automatically “returned” to the Library. At that time, you can delete the expired file(s) from your machine.
