READ Around the World Summer Reading Club

Saturday, June 12 – Saturday, August 7

Batavia children from birth through middle school are invited to participate in the Youth Services Summer Reading Club 2010. This independent reading program encourages shared reading experiences for non-readers and offers an enjoyable, fun reading experience for readers of all levels. Book a ticket to adventure this summer at the Batavia Public Library.

 

Movies at the Library

Friday, July 2, 11 am

Monday, July 12, 6:30 pm

Cool off at the Library this summer and enjoy a movie with refreshments. Please call Youth Services for movie title, length, and rating. No registration required.

 

Chess Knight

Tuesdays, July 6–27, 7 pm

Ages 8–adult

Students age 8 and up, including high school students and adults, of all skill levels are welcome to play chess. Participants should have a basic knowledge of the game. Feel free to bring your favorite chess board and make it a family knight. No registration required.

 

Dinosaur Encounter

Wednesday, July 7, 7 pm

Families with children age 5 and older

Calling all dinosaur enthusiasts! Join amateur paleontologist and award-winning author Janet Riehecky, as she shares actual dinosaur facts, fossils, and replicas of dinosaur parts, including a Tyrannosaurus Rex foot! Be a part of this highly visual and interactive program. This program is most appropriate for families with children age 5 and older. Seating for this event is on a first-come, first-served basis. The doors to the meeting room will open at 6:45 pm. No registration required.

Globe Trekkers

Friday, July 16, 11 am–Ireland

Friday, July 30, 1 pm–Japan

Take a side trip with fun and games from countries around the globe. Through an open-house format, you’ll be introduced to a game or sport, craft activity and treat representative of our featured countries. Activities will be available for one hour and are open to all ages. Children 6 and under must be accompanied by an adult. No registration required.

 

Weber Irish Dancers

Wednesday, July 21, 7 pm

Don’t miss an opportunity to experience the culture of Ireland through this performance by the Weber Irish Dancers. Enjoy traditional Irish dancing and learn a bit about the history behind the costumes and dances. Bring the whole family for this energetic performance. Seating for this event is on a first-come, first-served basis. The doors to the meeting room will open at 6:45 pm. No registration required.

 

On-the-Go Bingo

Friday, July 23, 1 pm

Children ages 3–14 are invited to play Bingo using our specially designed cards and regular number bingo. We’ll play as many games as we can in one hour. Children under 5 must be accompanied by an adult or older sibling. No registration required.

 

Family Fiesta

Monday, July 26, 7 pm

Bring Mom, Dad, Grandma and Grandpa for an international celebration of stories in both English and Spanish. Families will enjoy stories, activities, a craft and refreshments. Weather permitting, we’ll enjoy the evening activities outside in the Reading Garden. Feel free to bring a lawn chair or blanket. No registration required.

Reader’s Theatre

Wednesday, July 7, 3 pm

Ages 8–14

Volunteer readers are needed for a Reader’s Theatre production of Roseanne Thong’s book, Wish: Wishing Traditions Around the World, to be performed at the Summer Reading Club Finale on Friday, August 6. No script memorization is required; however, cast members must be comfortable in front of an audience and work well together. Auditions will be held on Wednesday, July 7, 3 pm. Rehearsals will be on Mondays and Wednesdays beginning July 12. Rehearsal schedule will be available at the Youth Services Desk. Registration required for audition.

What does GPS stand for? In what city could you visit the Eifel Tower? Test your trivia knowledge of things related to places and travel and win prizes! No registration required.

 

Pajama Party

Join us for a PJ party storytime! Wear your pajamas, bring a blanket or stuffed animal and join us for stories, a craft, a short video and, of course, a bedtime snack.  Registration required.

 

American Red Cross Babysitter’s Training Course

Thursday, July 15, 9:30 am–4:30 pm

Ages 11–15

Basic babysitting skills and emergency care training will be offered by the American Red Cross. In order to receive certification from the Red Cross, participants must attend the entire session. Space is limited. Due to the popularity of the program, a lottery-style drawing will be held to select participants. Registration for the drawing will begin Sunday, June 20. The drawing will be held Wednesday, June 30 and participants will be notified. A parental permission form must be signed by parents after notification. Priority is given to Batavia Public Library cardholders.

 

Yarn Spinners

Tuesdays –Thursdays, July 20–22, 27–29, 1 pm

Ages 8–14, parent welcome

Want to learn how to knit or crochet? Here’s an opportunity for students and student/parent teams to learn some basic skills. All levels of experience welcome. Please bring your own knitting needles (aluminum, size 10) or crochet hook (size G/H) and we’ll provide the yarn! Please plan to attend all six sessions. Registration required.

Girls and their mother or a female adult are invited to chat and enjoy activities based on Amelia’s Are-We-There-Yet, Longest Car Trip Ever by Marissa Moss. Ten-year-old Amelia keeps a journal of the summer car trip she takes with her mother and sister to Grand Canyon, Death Valley, and their California hometown to visit Amelia’s best friend. When Amelia and her big sister, Cleo, are stuck together in the backseat of a car for a family road trip, there are fights, plenty of sights, and Amelia’s best friend, Nadia, at the end of the road! Reading with Rover

Practice your reading skills by reading aloud to a specially trained therapy dog. The goal is to create a positive, non-threatening, and fun environment in which reading is enjoyed. Please register for one 20-minute time slot.

Interested in signing with your young child but don’t know how to get started? Licensed sign language interpreter, Sheryl Ebersold, will use signs, songs and activities to engage young children and their caregivers. Sheryl will show caregivers how to incorporate signs into songs, daily activities and reading. Infants and toddlers are invited to sign, sing and dance. Registration required.

 

Go Go Babies

SRC Grand Finale

Friday, August 6, 7 pm

Our Summer Reading Club finale takes us south of the border for a FUNtastic fiesta. Celebrate your reading accomplishments with professional demonstrations of Mexican Rope Trickery and traditional Mexican dancing. Escamilla Entertainment brings a National Champion of the Art of Trick Roping to Batavia so wear your sombreros and be amazed by award-winning roping tricks. Miss Debbie and her Reader’s Theatre group will also give a performance of wishing traditions from around the world. All children attending the finale will have a chance at our door prize drawing. This program will be held at Rotolo Middle School. Free tickets for this performance will be available at the Youth Services Desk beginning July 11.

 

READ Around the World Summer Reading Club
